Crimes caught on surveillance

One of the first CCTV uses was in Hannover Germany, 1959 for traffic purposes. Since then, video surveillance technology and usage has expanded in scope. As such, the increase in crimes caught on tape has spiked. Crimes such as kidnapping, theft, burglaries and arsons have been caught on camera. Coupled with the prevalence of social media, it’s easier for law enforcement to identify and arrest suspects.

As recently as January 2018, an Illinois man was caught kidnapping a child from their yard. A neighbour’s security surveillance system had the perfect view of the crime. Police are even able to piece together clues and evidence from different angles of surveillance footage and catch murderers and thieves. Riots and social media have been useful for law enforcement to appeal to the public for help identifying people of interest and proving their activities.
